Federal Government ready if rain and cold kills grass in drought areas

The Federal Government is ready to assist farmers in flood-affected regions in North West and Central West Queensland, Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud said.

Continued wet weather combined with now cold conditions and water laying over large tracts of land could impact stock condition and feed levels.

Minister Littleproud has written to Queensland Agriculture Minister Mark Furner to flag his concern and ask that the Queensland Government be ready to deploy support to those local shires if required.

Minister Littleproud also said the Federal Government stood ready to help if asked.

“If there’s a surge in applications for the Farm Household Allowance, we’ll make sure there’s more Rural Financial Counsellors to help fill out applications for free,” he said.

“If farmers need loans to help re-stock their properties, the Regional Investment Corporation is ready to help.

“We rely on state governments to assess whether an event is a natural disaster and let us know, so I want to keep the channels of communication open.

“It’s heartbreaking that from such a prolonged drought, we now could go to a situation where some farmers may actually lose grass from too much rain.”
