Seafood industry comes together in national industry body

NT Minister for Primary Industries and Resources Ken Vowles is in Adelaide for the launch of Australia’s new national body for the seafood industry – Seafood Industry Australia (SIA).

Mr Vowles said the new national body – formed with extensive input from the Northern Territory Seafood Council – will benefit the local industry through advocacy, promotion and improved practices.

“Managing our marine environment nationally is fundamental to the sustainability of the seafood industry and this new body gives the industry a united voice,” Mr Vowles said.

“The Territory’s seafood industry is a strong contributor to the NT economy. It’s also a vital and innovative player in the national industry, with the NT first to promote its local industry with “Support NT Caught”.

“The NT has been instrumental in the establishment of SIA, and thanks must go to NT Seafood Council CEO Katherine Winchester for her tireless work in bringing together the industry at a national level to form this body.

“SIA includes representation from the wild catch, aquaculture and post-harvest sectors including retailers and exporters, and aims to develop and promote an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable seafood industry.

“Every Territorian knows how important the seafood industry is to our economy, and this national body will provide support and representation to further grow our industry,” Mr Vowles said.

Inaugural board members include Veronica Papacosta (Chairperson), Marshall Betzel, Chauncey Hammond, Dennis Holder, Mark Ryan, Marcus Stehr and Belinda Wilson.
